How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Mac, Windows and Android

Your iPhone photos will not upload, open or print because they are HEIC. Here are the quick ways to get regular JPG files on every common device.

In a web browser, on any device

The simplest method that works the same everywhere is a browser-based converter. Open the page, drop in your HEIC files, pick JPG and download. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, and a good one processes files on your device so nothing is uploaded.

You can convert many files at once and download them as a single ZIP.

On an iPhone or iPad

Sharing a photo from the Photos app to Mail or Messages sometimes converts it automatically. If you want to control it, open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible so new photos are saved as JPG. When you copy photos to a PC, the Photos settings under Transfer to Mac or PC has an option 'Automatic' that converts to a compatible format.

To convert photos you already have, drop them into a browser converter in Safari and download the JPG files straight to the Files app.

On a Mac

Open the HEIC in Preview, choose File, Export, set the format to JPEG and adjust the quality slider. To do a batch, select all the images in Preview's sidebar before exporting. Finder also offers Quick Actions, Convert Image, when you right-click one or more files.

On Windows

Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC after you install the HEIF Image Extensions, and often the HEVC Video Extensions, from the Microsoft Store. The Photos app can then open the file and Save As JPG. Because that is slow for dozens of pictures, a browser converter is usually faster.

On Android

Most recent Android phones open HEIC in the gallery. To convert, use a web converter in Chrome or share the picture to an app that exports JPG. If you only need it for an upload form, converting online is the quickest path.

Will quality change?

HEIC to JPG is a lossy to lossy conversion, so there is a very small loss, but at a high quality setting you will not see it. The JPG will be larger than the HEIC, roughly double, for the same visible quality.
