Why do iPhone photos come out as HEIC?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC keeps roughly the same visual quality as JPG at about half the file size, which saves storage space on the phone.
The problem starts when you share those files. Many Windows apps, older versions of Photoshop, web forms, print shops and email clients still do not understand HEIC, so the upload fails or the picture will not open. Converting to JPG solves that, because JPG is supported by practically everything.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- 1Click the box above or drag your .heic files into it. You can select many files at once.
- 2Pick a quality. 90% is a good default: it looks the same as the original to the eye and keeps files small. Use 100% only if you plan to edit the result again.
- 3Press Convert, then download each JPG or grab everything as one ZIP.
Will I lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so a conversion always re-compresses the image. At 90% or higher the difference is invisible in normal use. Keep your original HEIC files if you may want the best possible quality later.
Note that Live Photos are converted as a still image only, and HEIC files with depth data (Portrait mode) lose the depth map, because JPG cannot store it.
Stop your iPhone from creating HEIC at all
If you would rather have JPG straight from the camera, open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will then be saved as JPG, at the cost of larger files.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
Does it work on Windows and Android?
Yes. Any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) can run the converter, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Chromebook.
Is there a file size or file count limit?
There is no limit set by us. The practical limit is your device memory: converting a few hundred 12-megapixel photos in one go may be slow on an older phone, so split very large batches.
Is my EXIF data (date, location) kept?
The converted JPG is a freshly encoded image, so metadata such as GPS location is generally not carried over. That is useful when you want to share a photo without revealing where it was taken.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?
Yes, use the HEIC to PNG converter. PNG is lossless but the files are much larger.
