How to reduce a JPG to a specific size
Many forms ask for a photo under 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB. Choose 'To a target file size', type the limit and the tool finds the highest quality that fits for you. Prefer to do it by hand? Use the quality slider and watch the size in the results.
If even quality 40 stays too large, the picture has too many pixels. Reduce its dimensions with the Resize Image tool first, then compress.
Quality versus size
Below roughly 60% JPG starts to show blocky squares and fuzzy edges around text. Above 90% the file grows quickly with almost no visible gain. The 70–85 range is where most people find the best balance.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
Will the compressed image look worse?
Slightly, as JPG compression is lossy. At 70–85% the difference is hard to notice for photos.
What if the result is bigger than my original?
That happens when the original was already compressed harder than your chosen quality. In that case the tool returns your original file untouched.
