Which sizes should an ICO contain?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels are enough. A Windows application icon should also include 64, 128 and 256 so that it looks sharp in every view, from small lists to large tiles.
A square image gives the best result. A picture that is not square is placed in the middle of a transparent square, never stretched.
Tips for a good icon
Use a simple design with strong shapes: small details vanish at 16 pixels. Start from a PNG or SVG at least 256 pixels wide with a transparent background.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The images inside the ICO are PNG data with full transparency.
Do I need a favicon.ico at all?
Browsers still request /favicon.ico by default, so having one avoids missing-icon errors. For a complete set of favicons use the Favicon Generator.
