What Shopify says about product images

Shopify's help page on product media says product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 × 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB. For square product images, 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best. Shopify says the best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG, and it also accepts TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP.

Shopify creates smaller versions automatically and serves each customer the best format their browser supports. To make collection pages look tidy, Shopify advises using a consistent aspect ratio for all your main product images.

How to prepare a Shopify product image

  1. 1Add your photos. Drag in JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC files, as many as you like.
  2. 2Keep the preset. Each picture goes on a white square of 2048 × 2048 pixels, the size Shopify says usually displays best. Photos that are smaller than that keep their own size and are not enlarged.
  3. 3Choose pad or crop. Pad keeps the whole product visible. Crop fills the square and cuts the edges.
  4. 4Save at 90 percent. Shopify re-encodes images itself, so keep quality high rather than squeezing the file hard.
  5. 5Download and upload the files to your store, in one ZIP if you processed several.

Why not compress hard before uploading

Because Shopify processes your images again, a heavily compressed upload gets compressed twice and loses detail. Resize to the display size and keep the quality high, and let Shopify handle delivery. If you want more guidance on the trade-offs, see how to reduce image size. Shopify lists PNG as the best file type, but a high-quality JPG is much smaller for photos and works well for most products.

Notes and limits

The figures above come from Shopify's help page and were checked on 10 October 2026. Shopify can change its limits and recommendations, so look at the current page if a file is rejected. The tool only resizes, shapes and saves your pictures. It does not remove backgrounds or fix lighting.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to your server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.

What size should Shopify product images be?

Shopify accepts images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB. For square product images it says 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best, which is this tool's default.

Which format is best for Shopify?

Shopify says PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG, and it also accepts WebP and HEIC. This preset saves high-quality JPG, which is much smaller for photographs.

Do all my product images need the same shape?

Shopify advises a consistent aspect ratio for main images so collection pages look even. A square is the simplest choice.

Can I convert iPhone photos at the same time?

Yes. HEIC photos are accepted here and saved as JPG in the same step.
