What is AVIF and why can't I open it?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files 30–50% smaller than JPG at similar quality, which is why more and more websites serve it automatically.

The catch is support outside the browser: many desktop programs, older operating systems, social networks and upload forms still refuse .avif files. A JPG works everywhere.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

Add your .avif files, choose a quality (90% is a safe default), press Convert and download the JPG files one by one or as a ZIP.

Your browser does the decoding, so this works only if it can display AVIF. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all can.

Transparency

JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so transparent areas become white. Use AVIF to PNG if you need to keep the transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to your server?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.

Why does my AVIF file fail to convert?

Your browser has to be able to decode AVIF. Update the browser and try again. Animated AVIF files are converted to a single still frame.

Will the JPG be larger than the AVIF?

Usually yes, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. Lower the quality slider if size matters more than fine detail.
