Why 1 MB?
Many upload forms, chat apps and email services work best with attachments under 1 MB, and a small file transfers quickly even on a slow connection.
Most modern phone photos are 3 to 8 MB. Under a 1 MB limit they keep their full look on a normal screen.
How it gets a picture under 1 MB
The tool encodes your picture again and again, searching for the highest quality that still fits inside 1 MB. That keeps it as sharp as possible.
If even a low quality is still too big, because the picture has a huge number of pixels, it is also scaled down a little and the search repeats. The result note tells you which quality was used and whether the picture was resized.
Compressing a whole batch
You can add many photos at once and every one is compressed to the same limit. Download them together as a ZIP.
If you need to send many photos in one message, combine them into a single PDF with the Image to PDF tool after compressing.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
Will a 1 MB photo look good printed?
For small prints, yes. For large prints keep the original; 1 MB is meant for screens, email and uploads.
What if my picture ends up larger than the limit?
That only happens with extremely detailed or very small pictures that cannot be compressed far enough. The tool then tells you the smallest size it could reach, and you can resize the picture first with the Resize Image tool.
