When you need a picture under 200 KB
Visa and immigration forms, bank and insurance portals and many HR systems ask for 200 KB or less per image. Documents such as ID cards and proof of address are usually photographed with a phone and are far too large.
How it gets a picture under 200 KB
The tool encodes your picture again and again, searching for the highest quality that still fits inside 200 KB. That keeps it as sharp as possible.
If even a low quality is still too big, because the picture has a huge number of pixels, it is also scaled down a little and the search repeats. The result note tells you which quality was used and whether the picture was resized.
Making text stay readable
Photos of documents need enough quality for the text to stay legible. If letters look smudged, try a larger limit if the portal allows, or reduce only the dimensions: a page photographed at 1600 pixels wide is usually still readable.
Good lighting helps too: a sharp, evenly lit photo compresses better and looks cleaner at a small size.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
Is 200 KB enough for a scanned document?
For a single page, yes, if the scan is about 1500 pixels wide. A full-resolution A4 scan can need more.
What if my picture ends up larger than the limit?
That only happens with extremely detailed or very small pictures that cannot be compressed far enough. The tool then tells you the smallest size it could reach, and you can resize the picture first with the Resize Image tool.
