A comfortable middle ground
500 KB is a common limit for web forms, CMS media libraries and support tickets. It leaves enough room for a good-looking picture, so you rarely have to compromise on sharpness.
How it gets a picture under 500 KB
The tool encodes your picture again and again, searching for the highest quality that still fits inside 500 KB. That keeps it as sharp as possible.
If even a low quality is still too big, because the picture has a huge number of pixels, it is also scaled down a little and the search repeats. The result note tells you which quality was used and whether the picture was resized.
Tips
A 12-megapixel phone photo usually fits in 500 KB at quality 60–70 once it is reduced to around 1600 pixels wide, which is more than most screens need.
Use WebP as the output if the destination accepts it: at the same limit it keeps noticeably more detail than JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to any third party, which is why it also works for private photos and large batches. Once the page has finished loading you can even switch off your internet connection and the tool keeps working.
JPG or WebP for a 500 KB limit?
WebP keeps more detail at the same size, but JPG is accepted everywhere. Use JPG for forms and WebP for your own website.
What if my picture ends up larger than the limit?
That only happens with extremely detailed or very small pictures that cannot be compressed far enough. The tool then tells you the smallest size it could reach, and you can resize the picture first with the Resize Image tool.
